Monday 6th July to Tuesday 14th July
Another successful year for Safety in Action. The 18th annual Safety in Action Event was held at Highlands College in July. Just over 1000 year 5 students from all 31 primary schools on the island attended the event, where they are taken through 6 interactive workshops and situations highlighting potential risks and dangers that they could come across or experience in their everyday lives. They were shown how to assess those risks and to remain safe.
Students were also instructed in how to contact the emergency services, how to put a casualty in the recovery position, testing your smoke alarm, having an escape plan incase of a house fire, road safety and safe places to cross the road, safety in the home covering electrical safety and the dangers of household cleaning products and the ingestion of button batteries ,what to do if caught in a 'rip current' and information regarding the flags and signs found at the beach. Sun safety and the proper wearing of cycle helmets and the new legislation regarding the wearing of cycle helmets were also covered.
